WorldTV for Broadcasters
What to do with online video? 50 billion clips served each month and hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. But where’s the money? What’s the best model for broadcasters?
WorldTV is the original pioneering research house for online video. We’ve been evaluating and developing online models for the broadcast industry for over 13 years. We developed the very first TV newsroom website in 1994, predicted the emergence of User Generated Content in 1995, and pioneered the first use of a global network of 5000 citizen journalists in 1999. Now we’re launching a platform, many years in development, that puts broadcasters at the heart of a new kind of distribution and model.
User Curated Content
User Curated Content (UCC) is the natural evolution of User Generated Content and takes in the developments, technical and otherwise that are happening with social media. Users are becoming the gatekeepers to their social networks – consuming, filtering and recommending content to their friends and audiences. By recognizing that it is digital ‘curators’ who represent the gateway to other people, it’s easy to see that by empowering these people with the right platform and the right content, you can raise awareness of your content to millions.
The Model
WorldTV has built a platform specifically for User Curated Content (UCC), focused exclusively on video and with broadcasters squarely in mind.
The model works like this…
- WorldTV operates a consumer platform allowing end users to create and curate their own miniature online TV channels
- We seed your promotional clips to our channel curators who then include them in their channels
- Your promotional content spreads virally leading to new viewers and potentially new programme sales
- We apply our content monetization expertise to your non-promotional content to find appropriate mutually beneficial strategies
Driving Traditional TV sales
An example is the BBC motoring show Top Gear. This show earned considerable awareness outside the UK after clips were posted online, leading to deals with NBC for Top Gear USA and SBS for Top Gear Australia. Without the buzz and awareness that was created by people watching the clips online, it is unlikely these deals would have happened. The show had run quietly on British screens for over 30 years.
As you can see, there is value in creating ‘bottom up’ viewer demand by seeding promotional content online. By seeding just a few clips from your latest TV series to the right people, it can drive interest and demand without affecting your main product or distribution.
We can take your promotional clip based content and put it prominently in front of more than 125,000 WorldTV channel operators. We can target by language or country (193 countries) and will provide extensive reporting and analytics. If you are a recognized broadcaster, this and our consulting service is completely free.
Who is eligible to use our free Broadcaster service?
You must be a recognized national broadcaster
Independent producers, distribution and production companies are not currently eligible for our broadcaster partner programme. Our service is geared to recognized broadcasters at a national or international level such as existing partner the Swiss Public Broadcasting Company (Schweizer Fernsehen), the BBC, National Geographic etc. Provincial or major market broadcasters with strong branding or awareness at a national level (eg CityTV Toronto) may also be considered.
Hosting of video content
Typically broadcasters will host the video clip content themselves or we can host it on our ultra low cost Content Delivery Network at the very low rate of $0.50 per gigabyte. You are probably paying much more than this and we’d be happy to show you how your company could save a lot of money in this area. Other free options are also available. Please ask for details.
How does it work?
You decide which WorldTV channel curators you’d like to target. For example, users in Switzerland plus users speaking German or French. We provide a control panel that lets you ‘push’ video clips to these users. Your clips appear prominently in a ‘branded tab’ (see below) with your logo, and you have complete control over the clips that appear. You can send system wide messages to the users at any time, as well as an introduction message, and the users are able to add your clips to their WorldTV channel. Since WorldTV channels can be embedded on user blogs, websites and social networks, your clips spread virally to these destinations as well. We provide full reporting so you can see how your clips are doing, and usage is tracked across all destinations. It can be used as a great way to test the popularity of different content.
