WorldTV Internet Charts Information

The current version is 1.56

Introduction

A new chart is posted automatically each Sunday at 7pm EST (Midnight GMT). The charts are then then reviewed manually on Monday mornings, and some clips edited at that time (see below for more on this policy).

The service is in constant development, meaning there may be reliability issues and downtime while we refine and improve the service.

In all cases, viewing figure information is extracted from the relevant source website, and compiled into a chart. In the case of Google, which does not provide weekly viewing figures, their daily chart from each of the last 7 days is recorded, and compiled into a weekly average.

NEW: Due to the way Google's chart has been changing very little from week to week, we've also implemented a new filter so that only new videos each week are shown on the Google chart. This now means that all clips on the page (with perhaps the odd exception) are new each week.

NEWER: A complete re-design of the page with dynamic tabs to integrate the new daily charts. More on this in the Changelog below.

The service is part-automated and part-editorial. Clips are removed manually that are highly viewed, but lowly rated, as well as clips which appear to have had their voting artificially manipulated. This is to improve the overall quality of the video clips on the page, and provide the best possible service to users. This is especially the case with Google Video and YouTube, where poor quality clips have a habit of making it into the most viewed list, usually by way of misleading but provocative titles (typically involving adult themes), or through possible manipulation of the voting system - something that appears to be happening more often of late.

So to summarize, the goal is to provide the very best possible service to people, and this means doing it the old fashioned way sometimes. This can of course mean we don't always get to it when we should! We are human after all.

Changelog

1.56 - WorldTV Daily Charts now out of Beta

1.55 - Fixed scraping problem with YouTube charts. Also a compounding problem in that 4 out of 5 stars as a cutoff point was leaving insufficient videos to display, so have reduced this cutoff again to 3 out of 5 stars. Re-implemented Videosift charts on both Daily and Weekly pages - another scraping problem there. Graphical improvements to the colour of visited links - now a little darker to make it easier to view. Added an orange background colour for when you hover over a link. If you have any suggestions for improvements, we encourage you to e-mail us at reception (at) worldtv (dot) com. We have been busy working on other stuff coming down the pipeline, but are committed to improving the charts moving forward. Thanks for your patience!

1.51 - YouTube Daily Chart filtering is now implemented. No videos below 3 out of 5 stars will appear in the Daily Chart. This will be increased to 4 out of 5 stars once some minor kinks have been worked out. The Weekly Charts are not affected. (11th September 2006)

1.5 - Big upgrade with lots of new features - A redesign of the whole look and feel - AJAX tabs, nicely curved edges, background gradients and other web 2.0 style stuff. First public launch of the Daily Charts - initially with YouTube, Digg and Videosift. All code is now HTML 4.01 Strict compliant. Video clips now pop up in their own window. These windows are tailored to the different destination websites. E.G. Google Video opens in a window that is sized and optimized for Google. YouTube opens in a window sized and optimized for YouTube. Hopefully these should improve the viewer experience. Also. The charts are now centered vertically so that viewers with large displays have the charts centered on the page (stupidly hard to do with 4.01 Strict). One more usability enhancement - all visited video clip links are now paled-out to help viewers know which clips they've seen previously. Link to Wikipedia added for NSSW. Change of name to the WorldTV Internet Charts (from the WorldTV Internet TV Charts). (10th September 2006)

1.29 - Major under the hood rewrite, construction of an admin control panel, first live testing of daily charts, and testing of a new front-end interface. (Sep 3rd 2006)

1.28 - Change of name to the WorldTV Internet TV Charts (from the Weekly Internet TV Charts). Added information to this page about the service being part-automated and part-editorial. (Aug 15th 2006)

1.27 - Re-write of timing engine to more accurately gather individual site charts. The quality of clips will be improved as a result. Removal of clips with non-roman character set clip descriptions. (Note this does not prevent non-english video clips from appearing, but will reduce the number of clips with non-english titles). Under the hood improvements to aid in adminstering the page's HTML template. (August 14th 2006)

1.25 - Addition of byline, some shrinking of CSS to fit better on screens with toolbars and other height reducing elements. Updates and addition of links and changelog to this page. Addition of bookmarking links on main page for Del.icio.us, Digg, Reddit, and Spurl. (Aug 2nd 2006)

1.20 - Google thumbnails are now resized and hosted locally to cut down on page load times. (July 20th 2006)

1.15 - Minor graphical improvements. Moved the 'updated' line to the top. (July 12th 2006)

1.10 - Addition of Digg chart. Digg and Videosift changed to top 7 only. (July 10th 2006)

1.05 - Addition of information page, and other graphical improvements (July 8th 2006)

1.00 - First version with Google, YouTube, and Videosift top 10 charts. (July 8th 2006)
